Jobs search

I was looking at indeed and simplyhired.com mainly as interesting applications of “crawl, index and add domain knowledge” algorithm. Since i accepted the new project, i am looking to hire 3-4 sharp people for my team. It is continuing to be an interesting experience from the hiring side, Especially as a hiring manager that’s part of a huge company.
I gave my job description to fred and he posted it everywhere. I was expecting a deluge of responses since this is a yahoo! job with decently visible role in a huge company. I got no direct responses aimed at this job yet.

I went about searching for the jobs i posted. I tried simplyhired and typed software engineer yahoo!. They come back with 92 jobs and only 33 of them are actually at yahoo!. The latest job they have is 6 days old.

I went to indeed.com and did the same search. They came back with 740 jobs, the most recent being about 9 hours old. Unfortunately, I cannot refine the search to see how many of these 740 jobs are at yahoo vs a description that mentions yahoo.
The major difference seems to be that indeed.com crawls hotjobs.yahoo.com, while simplyhired doesn’t. I wonder why?

In any case, I learnt that typing sourceforge or savannah is the best way to find the jobs i posted on either hotjobs or indeed. Simplyhired hasn’t indexed the jobs i posted yet.

    hey Ravi -

    i believe there were some issues with our crawl re: HotJobs that we’ve been addressing in the past week. not sure if we’ve got everything resolved, however now you should see HotJobs as a data source for results.

    i just ran a query on “software engineer yahoo” and got 485 results, and then when i used the company filter to further zero-in only on jobs at Yahoo (not descriptions with Yahoo in them) i got 165 matches.

    (note that i believe you can also do a similar drill-down on Indeed, however i think you have to first click on their ‘Advanced Search’ link and then type in Yahoo in the company field; or use their advanced search syntax directly from the main search box)

    as a final note, if you constrain the search to only show jobs posted within the past 7 days, using the above filter criteria you get about the same # of results from both sources — 108 from Simply Hired / 84 from Indeed.

    beyond the raw # of results, i might also point out the average job seeker may also be interested in other helpful features such as our LinkedIn integration for looking up referrals, or the Job Ratings capability to rate & track interesting opportunities.

    in any case, thanks for pointing out the HotJobs issue; we’ll keep working on that and make sure we get it resolved.
